Why Use An Acrylic Concrete Sealer?

Concrete is a highly durable material. The durability is the result of the specific design of the concrete mixture, the amount of entrained air and water in the compound, and the placement and curing of the concrete. Concrete is long-lasting, low-maintenance, and cost-effective.

Over time, however, concrete is susceptible to water damage, staining, surface damage, and corrosion. This deterioration leads to aesthetic and structural problems as well as safety concerns. To protect concrete flooring, most companies opt to add acrylic concrete sealers.

What are Acrylic Concrete Sealers

Acrylic sealers form a protective film on top of concrete that forms a resistant barrier. These sealants are available in both water-based and solvent-based formulas. Both mixtures consist of acrylic pieces suspended in a liquid. If the sealer is water-based, the liquid is water. Solvent-based liquids used are generally xylene or acetone. Once applied, the liquid evaporates, allowing the acrylic particles to form a film on the surface. This protective layer has numerous benefits.

  • Increased Durability: Acrylic sealers are designed to prevent wear and tear, resulting in a longer life-span. They provide chemical and stain resistance. Concrete sealers also enhance the color of concrete.
  • UV Resistance: Acrylic sealers are 100% transparent to ultraviolet light. There is no chemical breakdown caused by UV rays.
  • Mold and Mildew Resistance: Acrylic topcoats encapsulate moisture in concrete, keeping the moisture where it belongs. This vapor barrier prevents mold and mildew from forming.
  • Dust Proof: Concrete sealers make floors dust proof. Dust bunnies will not stick to floors covered by an acrylic sealant. Cleaning is easier, only requiring a cloth or mop.
  • Stain Resistance: Chemicals found in everyday products such as gas, oil, fertilizer, and even bodily fluids react with concrete. These chemicals cause staining or yellowing of your concrete. Sealers prevent these chemicals from penetrating the concrete and allow for easy cleanup.
  • Prevents Chloride Intrusion: Salt and other chloride containing substances are the number one cause of corrosion in concrete. A sealer prevents the concrete from absorbing the corrosive elements, extending the life of the concrete.
  • Decorative Options: There is a difference between the appearance of water-based and solvent-based sealers after they cure. Solvent-based sealers leave a glossy finish, enhancing the color of the underlying concrete. Water-based sealers leave behind a matte finish.
